Each year, the MIT Excellence Awards “acknowledge the extraordinary efforts made by members of our community toward fulfilling the goals, values, and mission of the Institute. Professionalism, commitment to best practices, and high standards of excellence are at the heart of these awards.” The Unsung Hero Award goes to those employees who consistently go above and beyond, fill in when and wherever needed, and solve problems and improve work situations without being prompted.

Carol Bailey has been a loyal IMES and HST hero for over 5 years, working for many years in communications and most recently as an assistant to the Alex Shalek and Jim Collins labs. Of the honor, Carol said, “All I can say is that I am stunned but unbelievably honored to be nominated and actually picked for this award. I am so very proud to be a part of IMES and MIT. I feel extremely privileged to work with such amazing people every day.”

Barbara Engel, who nominated Carol for the award, commented: “I had the joy and privilege of initiating, writing, and submitting Carol’s nomination—with the strong support and encouragement of IMES colleagues—including gathering tribute quotes from current and former colleagues of Carol from within IMES as well as from other departments. It was a true labor of love.”

Additionally, Carol’s previous supervisor and IMES Assistant Director of Administration and External Affairs, Robert Fadel, remarked: “It’s a wonderful occasion when IMES and MIT can pause and appreciate the hard and loyal work of one of our colleagues. Carol’s nomination by her peers and the heart-felt testimonials of staff and faculty are the best recognition you can seek. Carol is a well of energy, knowledge, and good-will. We have been fortunate to experience her ‘can-do’ attitude, and now are fortunate to have a time to celebrate it.”

The MIT Excellence Awards ceremony will take place today, Wednesday, March 11, at 3pm in Kresge Auditorium. Please join us in congratulating Carol on her achievements.
