Dr. Freddy Nguyen was recently selected as a 2025 Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)—one of only ten individuals nationwide chosen through a highly competitive process. This program is part of NAM’s broader initiative to improve diagnostic accuracy, safety, and equity across healthcare. It supports emerging leaders who are advancing transformative work in diagnostics with high potential for real-world impact.

The goal of the NAM Scholars program is to accelerate innovation and leadership in the diagnostic space by supporting independent research that addresses critical gaps in how diagnostic processes are designed, delivered, and evaluated—particularly for historically underserved populations. It reflects NAM’s vision of diagnostic excellence as a cornerstone of safe, effective, and equitable care.

Freddy is a physician-scientist with a background in chemistry, engineering, and clinical pathology. He currently serves as a Research Fellow at the MIT Office of Innovation and Director of the MIT Catalyst Scholars Program, where he leads various translational research projects mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and medical students.

This NAM funded project will develop a patient-centered framework to guide the equitable design and validation of diagnostic technologies, with a focus on addressing bias, technology development, study design, data representation, and clinical implementation challenges. The work builds on ongoing research he’s led at MIT and aligns strongly with the institute’s priorities in diagnostics, health equity, and translational science.
