News: IMES community profile: Larissa de Souza Martell

Larissa de Souza Martell is Senior Administrator to Elazer Edelman, director of the Center for Cinical and Translational Research (CCTR).

Larissa joined IMES earlier in July, bringing significant administrative experience in operations management, event logistics and financial administrative. Born and raised in Brazil, she moved to the US on her own in 2019, and has been building a life here, ever since. Read on to learn more about Larissa.

What makes the area you came from distinctive, or interesting?

I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a city that combines the energy of a major metropolitan area with the beauty and laid-back atmosphere of the coast. It's known for its incredible natural landscape, vibrant culture, and diversity. Rio is home to world-famous landmarks like Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Two Brothers Mountains, making it one of the most recognizable cities in the world. Growing up there gave me a deep appreciation for nature, community, and resilience.

What did you study in college?

I earned my bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Universidade Pitágoras (UNOPAR) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My education gave me a strong foundation in organizational management, operations, finance, and problem-solving, which I've been able to apply across my various experiences.

Can you tell us more about some of your past jobs? 

I've worked in several different industries throughout my career, but moving to the United States and joining MIT has been both the most challenging and the most rewarding experience. Over time, I learned how MIT operates, built strong professional relationships, and gained experience supporting complex academic and research environments. It's been incredibly rewarding to grow my career here and continue learning every day.

You had a previous job at MIT…how did it prepare you for your current role at IMES?

My previous role gave me a solid understanding of MIT's systems, culture, and collaborative environment. It also taught me how to navigate a large institution, manage competing priorities, and build relationships across departments. Although I've only been at IMES for a few weeks, that foundation has made the transition much smoother. I'm still learning every day, but the people here have been incredibly welcoming, and it's been a great fit so far.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

A slow morning with homemade breakfast, a good workout, and time to read a book. Then spending the afternoon at the beach or hiking somewhere surrounded by nature, followed by dinner with friends and ending the night with karaoke or a fun trivia game.

What is an interesting fact about you?

I'm a first-generation college graduate from a low-income family. I moved to the United States in 2019 knowing very little English. Learning the language and improving my pronunciation became a personal challenge, and looking back, it's something I'm incredibly proud of. It reminds me that growth often begins when we push past our own fears and limiting beliefs.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy reading, watching classic movies, going for walks in nature, and trying new recipes. Lately I've also been prioritizing fitness and spending more time outdoors. I love learning new things, whether it's through books, traveling, or conversations with interesting people.

What is the most fun vacation you’ve ever had? 

My birthday trip this year was unforgettable. I took a solo trip to Miami and got to meet people from all over the world, including many who were visiting the U.S. for the World Cup, and it turned into an adventure full of great conversations, new friendships, and memorable experiences.

What is on your bucket list?

Traveling to Italy, Greece, and Egypt is high on my bucket list. I'd also love to learn pottery on a wheel and, one day, build a self-sufficient farm where I can live closer to nature.

What fictional character do you relate to the most, and why?

Moana. I admire her curiosity, resilience, and determination to explore beyond what is familiar. She embraces challenges, keeps moving forward despite setbacks, and isn't afraid to step outside her comfort zone to pursue a greater purpose. I relate to that mindset, especially through my own journey.

Do you have a favorite song? 

One song I never get tired of is "A Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay because it's uplifting, energetic, and reminds me to appreciate life's journey.

What’s your favorite TikTok, Instagram or YouTube video? 

I don't really have one favorite video, but I enjoy watching videos about travel, nature, history, architecture, and behind-the-scenes looks at scientific research. Those are the types of content I find myself coming back to the most.
